The course would lay the foundation for further exploring the vast area of microwave engineering analysis and design. The concepts of microwave measurement both in the traditional microwave bench and network analyzer would be explained and some typical applications of the tools like impedance matching, network analyzer calibration, and directional coupler characterization would be demonstrated. The lectures would try to emphasize the need to understand the key concepts behind these tools for solving various analysis and design problems in microwave engineering. The course will introduce three basic tools of a microwave engineering: smith chart, s-parameter and signal flow graph. The Smith chart is a very valuable and important tool that facilitates interpre-tation of S-parameter measurements. If we are dealing only with impedances with non-negative resistive components, our interest is focused on the area inside the circle. Those with negative real parts map outside the circle. Complex numbers with positive real parts map inside the circle. Amitabha Bhattacharya, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. The Smith chart is a mathematical transformation of the two-dimensional Cartesian complex plane.
